I knew people in Buffalo; I had been a creative associate with the Lucas Foss group at SUNY Buffalo in the late 60's and my friend partner at that time, Linda Cummiskey, was a creative associate with them in 1975 as their violinist. Perhaps it was partially because she was in residence at that time that all this came about. She was performing Graphic Music of mine with that group, as well as other solo violin music of mine written during that period.
I had been doing Graphic Music, Artwork — both various forms of graphics on paper as well as painting canvases having nothing to do with music — at that time. I must have said something to Linda who talked to Judy Treible, the director of Gallery 219 at SUNY Buffalo, about my doing a show with concerts of my music, and then, perhaps, through Judy, doing an installation of paintings and sound plus concerts to take place at Hallwalls Gallery, also located in Buffalo in conjunction with the events taking place at Gallery 219. Hallwalls was what was then referred to in the performance world as an "alternative space," as opposed to say, a concert hall or a cemetery. The Gallery 219 show was a survey of recent work including graphics of all sorts, paintings on paper, and examples of my Graphic Music from different series or folios.
