The large format, SX70 configurations were made specifically for an extensive solo show at the Photography Gallery in La Jolla in 1985 that was a survey of my work going back to work done in 1975. The actual SX70 images in these large format pieces came from various SX70 series such as "A Year of Light," the "Harley Family," and images that combine material from various print media. In one configuration, fro example, my Polaroid images appropriated from diverse sources are all seen in an envelope window, such as those that are frequently used by businesses unlike the regular solid envelopes used by most of us for personal mail. The goal, or intention behind these large formats was to find an interesting way to present (and sell) some of the multitude of individual SX70 images (not already grouped) in a more formal, interesting and imposing manner than simply presenting them as individual images. Joseph Bellows — currently is in La Jolla, Ca. where he has a beautiful gallery devoted to photography, and, as well, is a high-level collector and dealer in rare photos. He made these complex mats for my work as well as all the other mats I used to display my photographic and collage work. For that alone, putting aside our friendship, I owe him a great debt of gratitude.
